The short version is this:
- Find out what you actually want for yourself.
- Write it down on paper. Physical paper.
- Make a plan for it WITH DATES ATTACHED. A goal without a date is a dream.
- Work.
- Evaluate > tweak > progress. Don’t do things that do not follow the plan.
The problem comes when you do step 4 without doing the rest. Swimming hard without a compass results in going very far to nowhere. Result? Drown.
