Review: Casual Japanese food at Sai Sai, Plaza Damas

One-word-review: Meh.

Sai-Sai is a casual Japanese restaurant in Plaza Damas (same row as Krop-Krop), looking quite authentic, like I’m in a casual joint in some unknown street in Tokyo. Their lunch sets seemed pretty affordable at RM15 so I decided to give it a shot.

I ordered lunch set 5 – Half Ramen, Gyoza, and fried rice. Overall I’d say it’s pretty satisfying, and if you’re not particularly hungry you can share it with a friend. The ramen was pretty tasty, and the Gyoza was flavourful, crisp, and light.

The other things on their menu seemed interesting enough, though I wasn’t in a spending mood today.

If anything, come for their Japanese TV ads; they really make you feel like you’re dining in the streets of Japan.

All’s well for me, until I got the bill. For RM15, I’d come back, but to my dismay, they added-on a 10% service charge and 6% GST, which brought the bill to RM17.50. The service wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t good either, and certainly nowhere close to deserving the 10% charge. For that same amount I could have a better meal in many of the other restaurants in the area.

Would I return? Unlikely, unless I’m craving for cheap-ish ramen for lunch.
